Searching Multiple pdf Files

Date: Feb 04    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 449

Switched (mostly) from WinXP to Ubuntu 10.04 several months ago, and am happy
with it.

However, so far I haven't learned how to search multiple pdfs, except one at a
time.

Adobe Reader can search all pdfs in a directory for a particular term, and
create a list of files, and places within each file, where the term exists. Is
there a Linux app that can do that?

Why not just use Adobe Reader? It's in the repositories.

Had no idea that there is an Adobe Reader version for Linux. I'll
look for it.

Also with Linux there is document reader. What I do is go to my PDF file
directory/folder click on
a file, so you have the reader up, then in the upper right corner is the
binoculars, click on that
and type in your search item and the reader will switch to a new page
and tell you what file
or files it is in, hope this helps.
Also you can load Adobe reader from the repositories. too.

That didn't work for me, so apparently I don't understand your instructions.
Here's what I did:

1. Navigated (with Nautilus 2.30.1) to a folder that has 120 issues of a
magazine, each issue in a pdf file.
2. Clicked one file, which opened it in Document Viewer 2.30.3.
3. Clicked the binoculars in the upper right part of Nautilus (there are no
binoculars in Document Viewer).
4. Entered my search term (Berwind) in the space provided, and pressed enter.
5. Nautilus reported, "0 items." Document Viewer didn't do anything.

In that directory, there are 6 documents (pdf), with 28 appearances of "Berwind"
(as reported by Adobe Reader in Win XP).

Have I misinterpreted your instructions (quoted below)?

(I am looking for a version of Adobe Reader for Ubuntu)

A different approach to searching multiple pdfs:

www.linuxjournal.com/.../searching-pdf-files-grep

requires poppler (apt-get install poppler-utils)

Ok, I somehow got it to work the other day, today it doesn't work. I may
be that I was
searching in Nautilus on the word that was in the title of the document
and not a word
that is inside the document. I also did not find within Document viewer
a search field
but then I don't know how to bring up Document viewer without clicking
on the document
you want to view either.
So I bet there is a way, and I will be looking for it, but it might be
easier to get the one
from Adobe since you know how that one works.
Sorry for misleading you on a wild chase.
