Reverted to Mepis

Just a comment. After several weeks of using 12.04 I have reverted
to Mepis. I found nothing drastically wrong with Kubuntu but saw
no reason to abandon a very stable OS.

MEPIS is okay. I used it for years, but it is based on Debian stable and it
is behind the curve. Its is slow developing, has a small community and it
has limited repositories in comparison to Kubuntu. If you can live with
that then it is an excellent choice.

It use to be a great flavor of Linux. In time the
support just was not there. However, if you like the look and feel of it. Go
with it. No one is going to chase you down with a banner and say. This X Linux
is the best. I do like the look of Lubuntu and is light weight.

The great thing about MEPIS is that it is based on Debian. I believe that
it is KDE based, too. Which is doubly good, IMO. I also like Warren
Woodford and the community. It is a small distribution, but since it is
Debian based it can act like a bigger one, having big repositories and a
larger community that is closely linked. The problem is that Kubuntu is
bigger in all respects and everything is up to date. If you do not need the
biggest and can settle for big and if you do not need the most
recent versions then MEPIS could be just the thing. For someone like me
aptosid is better because it has Debian ustable as its basis, just like
Ubuntu. I am also not partial to rolling releases but that is just me. I
like looking forward to the next big thing.

MEPIS is definitely worth a try for anyone disaffected with Ubuntu. Kubuntu
on the other hand is not linked with Canonical any more and the only reason
to switch from it is if it is not working for you, IMO.

Yes, Mepis is a good Debian derived distro with a KDE desktop . I still
have version 8.0 (AD2008) on a laptop with P3-866MHz and only 256MB RAM
(max for that machine).
Of course rather ¨long in the tooth¨ but still usable ........keep it as is
for posterity.

To expand a bit on the reason for reversion. I have used Linux for
several years and have looked ('played?') at various distro's.
I still do that when time allows and with a preference for KDE have
Mepis Kubuntu Chakra and AVLinux living on the elderly desktop, and
any of the latter three liable to change if something else appears.

Mepis may be a bit behind the times but it is stable
and I always know what to expect with it. Apart from my open source
interests, I am the moderator of, and provide tech support to a medium
sized group using a specialised CAD programme for quilt design. This
generates a pile of email and needs fairly frequent web access. I'm
writing training notes for this group and for two other groups using Lyx
as my word processor/publication editor. All of this will be
based on Mepis - where it used to be. Perhaps Warren will release
an update ? If I am still on this earth then, I will continue to
use Mepis as I can expect it to behave properly and not waste such
little time as may be left to me.

Guess that's why the Linux way of working is so confusing for users
brought up on the Microsoft/Apple system of "Here's what you are
getting, so get used to it." We can pick and choose which version of
Linux suits us best :-)

Tried Unity and whilst it's fine for the basic user I feel it's just
too restrictive so tried Kubuntu 12.04 and really like it so I'll
stick with this for the next 5 years :-)

Yes and no, I was not brought up on a diet of MS, and
the only work with Apple was maintaining a group of Apple II 'boxes'
that we used to generate colour/exposure control punched tapes for
high speed cinefilm printing. My bare bones Mepis has had extras
added to it and as Roy said, the repository is a bit limited. I can
live with that

Mepis is used most for my basic day to day computer activity and,
dare I say it, I have to revert even further to use MS XP for a couple
of jobs that refuse to run on Wine or CrossOver. I can see no point
installing one of the Virtual systems so that I can run XP on a Linux
machine. I have XP on a midle-aged Toshiba Portege that will probably
outlast me.

Enjoy MEPIS and keep sending updates on how it is going. It is one of those
good distros that gets little exposure.
