what is ncurses?

Date: Nov 30    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 291

I downloaded a ham radio contest logbook called 'tif'. When I type that into
the command line it says 'command not found'. I checked the description in
synaptic and it says: 'Tlf is a console (ncurses) mode general purpose CW
keyer, logging- and contest program for hamradio.'

At the risk of sounding as stupid as I feel what is ncurses and how do I
load and run it?

I am not positive but maybe a search of the Amateur Radio site for TIF in
Synaptic
Manager and have it installed from there.

I just checked and there is a TLF in the amateur radio applications to
install and try.

maybe try typing it with a capital T...? also try man Tif, and Tif --help

reading man ncurses, it seems to be just a way to make a terminal
environment that is platform independant... try looking here

Someone else that has more of a clue than me will probably chime in. :)

The program is called tlf, not tif.

After you install a program from Synaptic, you can right-click on it in Synaptic
and select "Properties". One of the Properties is a list of what files were
installed.

i have asked about TLF (the left foot) on the linux ham forum it
seems that it has been broken in Ubuntu since hardy heron.

It may be but I am guessing that tif vs. tlf is the issue in this case.
Type in the tlf in the terminal rather than tif and at least it should
start.

That would certainly explain why I couldn't find any information about
"tif" when I looked. OT: "ncurses" is going to be my new default
swear word...
