Installed latest version in java

my problem is:
I was downloaded and installed java JRE 6 update 2 but if I verify java
installation in java web site, the result is:

(( Oops! You don't have the recommended Java installed.
Your Java version is 1.4.2-02. Please click the button below to get the
recommended Java for your computer. ))

I find it best to use synaptic to control downloads. It has jave ready
for you to update and seeks and controls where it goes.

Open a gnome terminal and type
java -version
and you can see what the latest version of java is installed on your
computer.
You may have multiple versions there.
