Funny error message

Date: Nov 30    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 406

While trying to update my Ubuntu Linux 10.04 system, I got the following
error message:

Failed to fetch
us.archive.ubuntu.com/.../Packages.gz
404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.30 80]
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

Is this a crucial error? Or can I just ignore it?

Have you tried to change the server in software sources?

It is edgy. The link is dead because edgy is no longer supported. He needs
to install a newer version. I am surprised that he has not encountered it
before now as this has been the case since April, 2008.

What puzzles me here is that Jeffrey says he's trying to update his
10.04 system. So how come it's pointing to the edgy repository at all?
Might just be a question of replacing that repository in Software
Sources list?

Answer #4    Answered On: Nov 30

That may be the case. Yes, the version of Ubuntu shows as 10.04. I'll
have to see what is happening with the repository.

Answer #5    Answered On: Nov 30

I found two software sources pointing to Edgy. I
deleted them, and all is well!

Answer #6    Answered On: Nov 30

You may have done an installation without re-formatting at some point,
otherwise your sources.list should have been deleted. It does not much
matter as your problem is resolved. Good work in sorting it out!

Answer #7    Answered On: Nov 30

it occurs to me that the lines you deleted could have been for necessary
(or useful) repositories, so that rather than deleting them it would have been
better to have replaced them with the correct (lucid) versions? If that were the
case all would seem well, but you could be missing important upgrades because
your system won't know they are available.

I'm not sure if this is a real worry, nor what the precise solution is if it is
a problem, but you might want to follow it up a bit more and make sure you're
not missing out on anything.

Answer #8    Answered On: Nov 30

Too late now for me to put them back, I think. Already
deleted! When I get a chance, I'll fire up my Linux box and copy and
paste the repositories that I currently have listed.

Answer #9    Answered On: Nov 30

You might want to consider installing the latest version of Ubuntu. It is a
free download. Otherwsie you are stuck in time circa October 2006.

I'm using Ubuntu Netbook Remix (although I'm posting from a
Windows machine right now -- away from my Linux box). Why doesn't the
automatic update function detect an old version? And, for the record,
in the About box, it shows I'm using 10.04, which I thought was the
newest version.
