What does this mean and how do I fix it?

I'm running Dapper and I have a number of problems with updates and
broken software they seem to root back to these 2 messages which both
mean diddly squat to me. What I need to know is how do I fix it

If I run Synaptic package manager to fix a broken package I get this :-
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/samba_3.0.22-1ubuntu3.5_i386.deb:
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 102

If I run Update Manager I get this:-
It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the
package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a
terminal to fix this issue at first.

If I run "sudo apt-get install -f" in the Terminal I get this :-
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource
temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is
another process using it?

Do you have Snyaptic open at the same time you are trying to run
dpkg -f? Are you running Samba? Found this link that may help.

Yes I've got Samba running and reading the link does
suggest others have had similar problems but I really
can not understand at all the guy's fix as for one
it's in dreadful English and for two even if it was in
understandable English I have no idea what he's on
about as he's talking geek.
