Deleted whole system and restored it

Date: Dec 18    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 436

First I deleted the whole Windows folder, booted the Windows hard disk and got
this error.
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I rebooted, booted Ubuntu and restored the Windows folder. Rebooted again,
booted from the Windows disk and Windows started again.

Then I booted Ubuntu, copied then deleted everything I had on the small disk,
partition C.
Rebooted, got this error:
NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Restarted, booted Ubuntu and recopied everything back where they were. Booted
Windows again and it loaded OK. Showed me some text files with some info.
I am absolutely shocked that Windows can be totally wrecked and
totally restored by using Linux

I recommend this for playing. Now I have all the system files to carry in my
pocket.
Please tell me what to delete to wreck a Linux installation and how to re-copy
to restore it, if possible.

It seems the NT bootloader for loading windows is missing.
maybe you can follow this instruction

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and
pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter
that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root
www.computerhope.com/jargon/r/root.htmdirectory of the
primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files
from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This
letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the
CD from the computer and reboot.

I know what I did and I will redo it for experimental reasons. Partition C can
be swept clean and then the folders restored under Linux. I have all the folders
zipped and on DVD now. CD-DVD Creator could not burn them to the DVD as they
were. Maybe I will make a movie showing this, but there is still no camera.

This is the way to learn, by doing. It adds to our knowledge base to see how we
can break the rules of Windows from Linux. Fun, too!
