Cross-referenced a sshd_config off of a functioning Red Hat 7.3 machine

I'm trying to get ssh working on a Red
Hat 6.2 box. I've installed openssl(0.9.6g) with no errors and also
installed
openssh(3.4p)with only a lack of compression support error. I've
executed sshd with no errors but if I try to log on using any account
It does not accept any assigned password(I've tried 5 different
accounts also). I've cross-referenced a sshd_config off of a
functioning Red Hat 7.3 machine and there does not seem to be any
discrepencies. Does anyone have any ideas?

What are the OS's of the two boxes that are trying to communicate?
If they are sufficiently out of sync you won't get in. We had this
problem with the cluster project between i586's and some old 486s.

One (with the problem)is a stand alone Red Hat 6.2 box I'm going to
use as a InoculateIT client/dat deployment box. The other is a Windoze
2k box using Secure CRT as the client. I know it's someting to do
with my ssh installation on the RH box because I can log into my
firewall(red hat 7.3) and both RS6000s
