I just downloaded QSSTV. The first question can be answered by
any knowledgeable Ubuntu user.

The program does not show up in any desktop folder. I have located the
program file and and Icon file. How do I get this onto my desktop
(preferably favorites).

Next question is for ham radio ops who are familiar with the program.
Is there a manual available?
I have not used any SSTV before right now I want to use RX only. I will
build an interface sometime in the future, but for right now I'm just using
an audio patch cable between my computer and an AR 8000 RCVR. So how do I
get started?

Just a guess, but have you tried Accessories/terminal:
man qsstv
To exit from the manual, press "q".

Did you install it from Synaptic?

While looking through usr/ I found a folder called qsstv/ when I opened it
there was index.html.

Yes I did download the file from synaptic.

I was looking at an Ubuntu forum about qsstv and there seems to be problems
with sync. Once again I am completely new to sstv.

What you doing? I have used such a program in doze years ago while I
was sailing. Used it for weather fax on 10 meters. The NL/CR character
in the broadcast starts the scan on a new line making a partial picture
if you start in the middle of a broadcast.

Most such programs just listen and print as the start of the line comes in.

downloaded and started qsstv using terminal. just type in qsstv at the
prompt to start. adjust the volume using the volume scale and test with
a transmisson received. looks very straight forward.

To create a short-cut on your desktop: Right-click on your desktop, select
"create launcher" select the icon by clicking on the button that has a
spring on it on the left side of the dialogue box that pops up. Type a name
for it, the select browse to navigate to the executable, or just type the
name of the program like you would if you are executing it from the
terminal. (In case you didn't know, you can launch just about any program
from the terminal: for example, open up the termial and type "firefox")

To get in in your menu: Right click on your menu, select edit menu, click
on the submenu you want to add the program to, and click "add item", then
follow the steps above.

I got no idea on the radio part of it.
