Blank Formula bar

I thought I had run across most of the silly things Excel does but this is new
to me.

I open excel and it opens a blank ss.
I type aaa in cell A1 (all is normal so far)
I type bbb in cell A2 (all is normal so far)
I click in cell A1

The formula bar is blank

I double click in cell A1

The edit in cell opens normally but the formula bar is still blank

When I start changing the text in A1 the text in the formula bar appears

If I double click A2 the formula bar is blank

If I click in the formula bar I can delete a character (which is an empty
space) and the characters after that character appear but not those before it.

This is driving me crazy.

It was indeed weird. My other PC worked OK.

I cured it but don't understand why. I changed the Display
Properties/Appearance setting from silver to blue(default) and then back to
silver. That fixed it so it was a windows glitch rather than an Excel one.
Let's hope the fix sticks.

I do not think that it should had anything to do with the view setting of the
windows. Have you tried to repair office xp, by going through installed
software, and please also check that "C:\Documents and Settings\(user
name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART" folder is empty.

It was the Windows setting - I don't know how that got corrupted. I had tried
the Detect and Repair - it made no difference. I have several things  in
XLStart but I know what they all are and have had them a while.
