There's different coding of bar codes and Code39 is the most universal. Most
bar code readers will read code39. Depending on what type of bar code language
you require. There is an extension for Libre and Open Office for bar codes.

Google 3of9 fonts. There are a couple of free ones out there. Type your text
into any word processor or spreadsheet, select it, and change to your 3of9 font.
Note: in many cases you will need to put an asterisk (*) before and after your
text to get a valid 3of9 bar code. If you want a different bar code (like UPC)
just find an appropriate font. This won't work for 2D bar codes; you will need
an application for that.
