Question Answered By: Adah Miller   on Dec 13

I believe he was asking if there was a way to be able to read the
directory of the disk. Sounds like it may be a custom mix, and he
would like to be able to replace the songs on another disk for his
friend.

CD Roms, as well as DVD roms, write from the inside out. If the crack
does not extend into the directory area, it may be possible that FP
will be able to read the directory. If it is split all the way down
into the directory area, it is likely that only FBI, CIA, and
expensive third parties have a chance to get your directory back for
you. The split will be seen as faulty data by the drive.

If FP is going to glue the disk, I would be very careful in the
alignment of the surfaces, and not to get any glue on the front (data)
side of the disk. First cut, I would use another disk to provide a
flat surface for the gluing. I would not glue the second disk to the
first. The drives are designed for the weight and mass of one disk.
Two could overload the mechanism.

The data surface needs to be flat, and the glued area should not be
raised. If it is, use something like a razor blade to trim if flush
with the disk surface. The heads ride very close to the surface of
the disk, and a ridge can catch the heads, and destroy the drive.

If you give it a go, let us know how it worked out.
