The FTDI drivers in Karmic are apparently broken. This thread

may help - different device, but the same problem.

Alternately, I can confirm that they work fine in Lucid (I have no
problems talking to an Arduino) - you may want to consider upgrading,
especially as Karmic is no longer supported.
