Which Box For Which Application?

Date: Jan 11    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 394

I have two applications I want to implement. The first is a NAS/Print
Server/MythTV backend with a wired ethernet connection, and the second is a
MythTV Frontend/Player that will need a WiFi connection. The MythTV tuner is
connected via a wired Ethernet connection.

I just picked up two $20 computers. The first is a 750MHz Duron, with 192 MB
ram (3 64 MB DIMMs), and the second is a 1.7GHz P4 with 448 MB RAM.

Because the MythTV Player box will also need to stream Netflix, I'll probably
just run XP on it, and I think I can get it to run on the 750 MHz Duron box.
That leaves the question of whether the the P4 box can do everything I want. At
the moment, the NAS is just for backing up the other computers in the house. I
am currently running the MythTV backend on my desktop which is always on, but I
would like to move it to the NAS box.

Do I need to run Apache on the NAS box, or would something like Puppy Linux
work? What about Mythbuntu, would it also function as a NAS??

Apache is a web server, so it's not relevant to what you want to do.

If the 750 MHz box delivers acceptable performance, that will be a nice
surprise. Does Netflix publish system requirements?

Have a look at the system requirements for Mythbuntu. It might require more
memory.
