udevd

I noticed today that a process owned by root called udevd is sucking up
about a half a cpu. I read the man page but it wasn't very helpful on why
this process should be so active. Any info muchly appreciated thank you.

Can be many things but a quick search showed that Optiarc DVD drives
are a common culprit so can you disconnect the DVD drive and see if
udevd settles down to more sensible levels ? If that does prove to be
the problem then a firmware update to the drive should fix it, or
changing the drive !
