Reinstall proceedure

Date: Dec 07    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 227

I'm getting ready to reinstall from my 9.04 CD.

Before doing so:

1. What files and directories do I need to backup?

/home
/boot/grub/menu.lst
/boot/grub/images
/boot/grub/splashimages
/opt

Anything else?

2. Is there anyway to search and replace my current owner name and group
name attached to files so that I can use a completely new name? As it
is, currently my owner name and group name are different because of
creating a new account and moving my /home directory there.

I'll be backing up to the second hard drive and reformatting the first
one. Most of my /home directory type files are there already,
documents, pictures, videos, etc. Should I maybe just start the home
directory from scratch so everything is reset?

3. B.t.w. - I've already dumped my package list, via dpkg -l so I can go
back and reinstall things. Is there a way to dump my added repositories
and keys?

Not dual boot. As to "anything but my data".. that's what I'm trying to
figure out.

Obviously my home directory, Also /opt has a few things there. I've got
a customized menu.lst. Along with several images for bootup. I don't
know where the file list of my extra repositories or associated keys
are, and I don't know if there is any other such "customized" data files
hanging around somewhere that I may want to keep.

I found answers to #3, but I'm still searching for answers to #2.

dpkg -l
/etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-key list
apt-cache pkgnames
sudo apt-key add /path/filename
