Ubuntu 8.04

Just in case anyone is interested in trying the linux version. My
brother has been recommending me to try Picassa and i haven't bothered
until today when i noticed the linux versions available. After all
Picassa is #1 choice... for those into the latest [i gather!].

I've only just installed the .deb this afternoon and it seems to work fine.

It would seem that when one installs a .deb ubuntu [whether 7.10 or
8.04 whatever] seems to compile and install for that particular
kernel. So why is it necessary to compile all the apps specially for
each release? I know it sounds as if i'm a bit dim (i'm still newish
to linux and keen to learn) but i don't follow why ubuntu have to make
themselves so much work.

I have used Picasa2 for some time. I enjoyed it with the other op sys
and works just as good in Ubuntu.

I've just been looking at Picassa again - why does a Wine System Tray
Adapter open in a window? As it is not running in wine i don't follow!

You are running a modified version of Wine now! Read the Google page here.

I'd be grateful if you could explain further. The google pages mention
something about being "ported" through wine.

It would seem logical that one could download the windows file
"picasa-current-setup.exe" and run it through wine [as it is installed
on my PC].

The file i downloaded was the linux ver 2.7 .deb - if this is 'ported'
through wine i'd be grateful if you could explain further.

I haven't used this myself so can only go by what Google say on their pages. It
appears that they have slightly altered the windows version of Picasa and have
also added some "improvements" to wine to enable the two to run as a package.
Presumably, the windows version wouldn't run "as is" through wine? I don't know
if you have followed through the pages but all I know has been gleaned from the
following two links: http://picasa.google.com/linux/learn_more.html

http://picasa.google.com/linux/faq.html#23

Sorry I can't give you any further information. Let us know how you get on with
it.

I missed the first of those links and read a different one. The
following sentence is obviously the glue
" Wine runs on top of the X Window System and Linux or Unix. But it's
not a Windows emulator; instead, it provides a Windows API middleware
layer that enables Windows programs to run on Linux without the
slowing effects of OS emulation or a virtual machine."

I am quite happy with gThumb and Gimp for my uses but my brother has
done more digital photography and rates Picassa highly. So i'll have a
go over the next few months and let folk know how i get on.

I use Picasa on all my Widows versions and Ubuntu. I downloaded it from
here

http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html

And it loaded easily in 8.4 Hardy Heron
