memory for video editing

I think I read someplace in a post that ubuntu will run more than one
Gig of memory and Xp will only run one. Someone gave me some memory that
will work in my computer a couple gigs. I have a dual boot system Xp
and Ubuntu My Hp machine says 1 gig. Will the machine blow up if I put
more memory in or will Xp crash and will ubuntu use it to advantage ?

You need to check you mother board specs to see what the max is.

Yep it depends on your proccess and motherboard architecture what Ram
you can use but most bistros tell you clearly what level of Ram is
required. To much and it does not get used by the software. Vista needs
2 gb but can use 4gb Fiesty needs 2gb to run well but can run OK on 256mb.

I didn't realise the mother board was the limiting factor.
I thought it could use any amount and XP or Ubuntu would be the
limiting factor. I am limited to 1gig.
