Memory shortage on root drive

My problem is...

I have a dual boot notebook with ubuntu installed in windows using wubi. Ubuntu
is also installed in C: of windows. My c: has approx 3-4 GB free space. But the
problem is when i log in in ubuntu, it is showing only 100 MB free space on root
(equivalent to C:). And now the big problem is i cant install ubuntu updates as
there is no space on root (ubuntu c:). So even though i have 3 GB free on C: i
dont have any space for Ubuntu. because of that i had to uninstall many of the
previously installed softwares in ubuntu to make some space. And as ubuntu
continueously keep giving updates, so the disk space problem has become
critical.

Please suggest something so that i can transfer 1 GB from windows to ubuntu on
C:.

You will need to uninstall Ubuntu and re-install it. Give the Ubuntu
more hard drive space when you set it up. I would suggest 4GB hard drive
space just for Ubuntu.

Its quite possible, that if i ll install a 4GB or 6GB version with WUBI then the
problem may not happen. This is because, i can recall when last time once i
installed ubuntu, then i installed the default 6GB option/ version of ubuntu.
And then there was no problem in updates and even i installed a lots of random
softwares also.

But this time i was experimenting with the installation and opted for 3GB
version/ option with WUBI.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try to uninstall the current version and
reinstall again and will check if the problem gets solved or not.

I went by your instruction and used the command "df /" in my terminal.... and
got the following details....

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk
2765720 2489388 135840 95%

So this is what i got as mentioned above....

This looks like your linux partition has only about 3G and that is pretty small
for loading modern applications. There are several things you can do and the
first is to add aother drive and you can mount this drive as part of your file
system. Another item is find files that you can safely delete. Try going to
the /boot directory and see if you have more than one linux kernel file. If you
have an old kernel you should be able to safely delete it. Look for files with
a .tar or .tar.gz extensions as these files may have already been installed and
can be deleted.

I think your suggestion has worked out... as i reinstalled ubuntu with wubi with
4 gb option... and now i am getting more than 1.2 gb of free space in root/ c:
drive for ubuntu. I think that will be enough for installing all the updates...
thanks for your suggestion...

Could you open a terminal and do a "df /" and report the statistics in a post?

He installed using Wubi, it is not a normal dual boot install.
