Light Directory Access Protocol. Look at the linuxdocs how to for more

LDAP = lightweight directory access protocol

an simpler form of the X.509 protocol.

Search google or (as an example) go to www.openldap.org. This is an
opensource implementations of a ldap  server. They have also docs.

Ldap is a Ligthweigth directory Access protocol, it can be used for
athentication and authorization using the directory data instead of a
Nis tree...
Search or sunone directory server, all the info u need is there
