Firewall equivalent

Right now I'm on an XP laptop and there is a very satisfying message on the
forum screen. OBJECT BLOCKED BY ONLINE ARMOR.

The object was probably Bing or Groupon, both of which are forbidden by firewall
and hosts file.

How do I get a message like this in Ubuntu? I'd need the code to do it.
There's another coupon site that will flash ads if I'm using Chrome.
Some sites also link to Bing maps. I'd love to block them totally.

I've been annoyed by some of this stuff for years. Starting with sites that
would not let you post/sign in unless you used IE (4,5 and 6). (usually banks)

How did Linux users access these sites if you wanted to bank online? The sites
finally allowed Netscape and now Firefox - but never Opera.
