Dropbox

A service I am using now, especially since I bought my eeePC which I use as a
media player and ebook reader is Dropbox. It is a free account that enables you
to save up to 20 GBs to the net and it creates a folder in your home folder
called Dropbox. You can link to public folders and invite friends to access
folders you want to share with friends and family. If you put a file into that
folder on your computer it is synced to the net and you can add and remove files
from anywhere you can get an internet connection. I put photos, videos, pdfs,
music and recipes in Dropbox. Now I can use my tiny eeePC as a recipe book,
photo album, media player and library. It is very handy.

The site is: getdropbox.com.You need to set up an account and you can download a
client for Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.10 (x86 and 64-bit), plus Fedora 9 (both 32 and
64-bit). Source code is available for other distros. I got the Ubuntu 7.10
version to install in SimplyMEPIS as it is just Debian at its core. I am not
sure if RPM users will be able to install the Fedora version in their distro as
RPMs are not so forgiving. You can get away without downloading a client as you
can upload manually from your browser.

Dropbox is a wonderful service to share things with friends. I love
it. I've been using it for about 3 months.

I like it in principal, but it uses a *lot* of resources on my machine.

I have 2G of RAM and 2G of swap (I had 1G of RAM when I set up the
machine, so I used the old rule of doubling it). With dropboxd running
and dropbox activated, nautilus grew to about 1.3G resident, more
virtual, and I soon was using all my RAM and 1G of swap (I think
that's all that can be used with 2G of RAM, but I'm not certain). The
load went up to about 3.5 and hovered there, and the system, which is
normally snappy, became sluggish.

I tried it on an XP machine with 512M of RAM, and had similar results.

I also made a mistake and filled up my 2G of space. No problem I
thought, I'll delete the unneeded directories, and as it syncs, they
will be removed from the account. Wrong, after I removed them, they
were restored from the account to my machine, and I was still using 2G
of space. So I tried in Windows, in case it worked better there. It
didn't, same result.

So I thought I'd go to the web interface and deleted the unneeded
folders. I soon discovered that you can only delete and purge one file
at a time with this interface, you can not remove a folder. I couldn't
believe this, so I checked the forums, and it turned out that this
feature is one they've been promising "real soon now" for at least 6
months.

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them, as this
seems like it would be a very useful service, if I could get it
working properly.
