Amateur Radio/Ubuntu

Been fooling with Ubuntu for a couple of months and doing fine with
Internet and networking. My biggest problem is to quit thinking in
terms of Windows/DOS but just cannot understand some of the lingo.
My query is; Is there a simple communications terminal program
available for use with Ubuntu, serial ports and MFJ or Kantronics
TNCs, such as Hyper Terminal in Windows, and how do you install?
Help will be appreciated.

Google "linux serial port": I found
http://www.jls-info.com/julien/linux/ to be of interest as it describes
a utility called gtkterm.

Run "apt-get install gtkterm"

I'm also a ham, looking for something that will let me remote-base my
FT-847 back home, at least on VHF/UHF. It would need to do rig
control, plus audio in both directions. I have the system, and can
build whatever hardware might be needed.

Radio-Frequency Builders,

As I like building my own receivers, transmitters, and just plain
gadgets, I use the Professor Coyle spreadsheet to analyze existing
inductors and design new ones. You can download the Excel version from

www.crystalradio.net/professorcoyle/index.shtml

and use the Open Office spreadsheet to save it as OO file. (The
download version is below the seb-based versions.)
