I agree 101% with what you say. All companies naively like to go with the
"Big Player" - otherwise known as falling for slick salesmanship. Whether
they deliver or not isn't as important. Linux can't compete on that level
even though it's often/usually a superior product.
And if they can get it free they will.
I'm not a programmer but I knew a chap who was brilliant at many IT jobs.
Programming was not his job, it was a hobby. He wrote several very useful
pieces of software for the firm which were used locally and across the 30
branches. He got paid nothing for this and he found himself giving free
support hours a day to many people he'd never even met. Finally he finally
woke up. His standard reply became "it's not supported any longer".
Most companies will take all the free stuff they can get, victimizing their
employees in the process. That's hardly the spirit of open source...
