you can find lots of samples on the net. why are u going for a web based instant  messenger ?
web based ones have less capabilities. although it depends on who will use it finally. in some situations u need web based messengers but due to their low capabilities they are not very popular.
if you want a usable messanger u should do it with swing or at least applets.
